11 days after the blast, Mamata travels to Khadikul

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, paid a visit to Khadikul village in the Purba Medinipur district on Saturday, 11 days after an explosion at an illegal fireworks factory there that left 12 people dead.

By 11 am, she had driven to Khadikul in Egra from Alipur in the district, where a makeshift helipad had been constructed, according to authorities.

Banerjee is set to meet with the relatives of the bomb victims. She will be joined by state chief secretary H K Dwivedi.

According to reports, the leader of the Trinamool Congress is expected to present compensation checks totaling Rs 2.5 lakh to each of the surviving family members of those killed in the May 16 bomb and Rs one lakh to those who were wounded.

Nine individuals have been detained so far for allegedly taking part in the explosion. The primary suspect, who escaped with his family shortly after the event, passed away three days later at a hospital in Cuttack, Odisha.

According to the authorities, Khadikul Banerjee would go to Salboni in the Paschim Medinipur district from there to join party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee for the TMC's “Trinamoole naba jowar” public outreach initiative.
