<p>Tatas will take over Wistron’s Karnataka facility, where the iPhone SE (second generation), iPhone 12 and 15 Plus are currently being produced and assembled.</p>
<p>The business said in its regulatory filing that, subject to board approval, it would sell Tata Electronics Pvt. a 100% interest in the division Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Pvt.</p>
<p>After careful study, the much-anticipated acquisition was sealed in response to the group’s reorganization of its worldwide factory layout and product strategy.</p>
<p>According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, the Tata Group would begin producing iPhones in India in approximately 2.5 years for both local and international markets.</p>
<p>“India has already risen to prominence as a reliable and significant center for smartphone manufacture and exports thanks to PM Narendra Modi’s innovative PLI initiative. The minister wrote on X, “Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations.”</p>
<p>With Indian enterprises leading the global supply chain, he said that this is “great going for Apple.”</p>
<p>“MeitY fully supports the expansion of international Indian electronics companies, which will help international electronic brands who wish to partner with India for reliable manufacturing and talent,” Chandrasekhar said.</p>
<p>Industry insiders said that the Tata Group should become proficient in producing high-end iPhones in the nation given their aspirations about semiconductors and electric vehicles.</p>
<p>With the purchase of Wistron, Tata Group will gain a manufacturing edge in electronics with the iPhone and may soon be able to produce high-end iPhone models as well. Prabhu Ram, Head of Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS, “We expect ‘Made in India’ to gain further momentum and India to emerge as a major fulcrum in the global electronics value chain.”</p>
<p>The Tata Group might become an even more important component of the iPhone production ecosystem in the coming years.</p>
<p>A significant portion of Wistron’s business in the nation is derived from its Karnataka manufacturing, which employs 12,000 people.</p>
<p>Apple needs additional suppliers to boost production in this country as iPhone use rises, since the company allegedly wants to shift a significant portion of its manufacturing from China to nations like Vietnam and India.</p>
<p>Motivated by in-country production, Apple iPhones are expected to capture 7% of the Indian smartphone market this year, which is dominated by Android.</p>
<p>Throughout the first half of this year, Apple iPhone shipments increased 68% (year over year) in the nation.</p>
<p>Due to a stronger “Made in India” campaign, CMR projects that shipments of the iPhone 15 will average about 65% during the launch quarter (October to December).</p>
<p>After its worldwide premiere last month, the first batch of “Made in India” iPhone 15 devices were sent to other nations in a short amount of time.</p>
<p>The nation reacted very well to Apple’s iPhone 15 series – about 50% more so than the previous year.</p>
<p>Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company has broken records for the June quarter in India thanks to strong iPhone sales.</p>
<p>According to Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint, Tatas’ semiconductor aspirations are serious and coincide with a critical moment in India’s digital aims, as reported by IANS.</p>
<p>In the future, Pathak said IANS, “their chips can be aligned with Apple and the learning curve will be great for them. First, they can leverage the semiconductor strength in their EV business.”</p>
<p>According to Counterpoint, significant investment from original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers, and component and parts businesses has made India the second-largest center for the production of mobile phones.</p>
<p>According to official and industry figures, the nation exported mobile phones worth $5.5 billion (more than Rs 45,000 crore) between April and August of the current fiscal year (FY24).</p>
<p>The Department of Commerce and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) estimate that mobile phone exports during the April–August period totaled $5.5 billion, compared to $3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) during the same period in FY22–23.</p>
<p>India’s mobile phone exports are expected to exceed Rs 1,20,000 crore in the current fiscal year, with Apple controlling more than 50% of the market in FY24.</p>
