<p>On the first day of the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad, Virat Kohli’s determined innings put India in control. The former skipper got his 30th Test fifty and then returned unbeaten on 87 in his 500th international game for India. After a few fast dismissals, Kohli and Jadeja put together an unbroken 106-run stand that allowed India to record 288/4 at the end of the game.</p>
<p>The Windies’ onslaught was met by Kohli with amazing patience on a track that didn’t encourage making strokes. <p>Social media users who were watching the game on television praised Kohli in comments, particularly when he reached fifty with a beautiful cover drive off Jomel Warrican. But West Indies wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva, one of his favorites, was nearby and just behind the stumps.</p>
<p>Joshua could be plainly heard on the stump mic chirping incessantly. To everyone’s amazement, though, his speech seemed more fanboyish. Since the star Indian batsman lost out on one in the previous match in Dominica, he was heard encouraging Kohli to hit a hundred this time.</p>
<p>Joshua afterwards overheard his mother telling him that she would be attending the Queen’s Park Oval to see Kohli bat.</p>
<p>I couldn’t believe it when my mother phoned to say she was going to watch the game for Virat Kohli, Joshua said.</p>
<p>When play resumes on Saturday in Trinidad, the Windies stumper will have additional opportunities to keep an eye on Virat. The latter will enter the second day of play only 14 runs short of reaching his first century in a Test abroad since December 2018.</p>
<p>A quick 139-run partnership between Rohit Sharma (80) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) earlier in the innings provided another ideal launch pad. But in the afternoon session, the West Indies attacked to slow down India’s scoring pace. In the last session, Kohli (87*) and Ravindra Jadeja (36*) produced some beautiful shots to help India score 106 runs in 33.2 overs without losing a wicket.</p>
