Australia, captained by Annabel Sutherland and Healy, defeats India by seven wickets in the final to win the T20 series 2-1

The sad journey of Team India in white-ball cricket came to an end on Tuesday, January 9, as the Women in Blue lost the series 1-2 against Australia in Navi Mumbai by a score of seven wickets. Following their victory in the first match of the series, India’s batting collapsed in the second and third Twenty20 Internationals due to a few bad outings. Tuesday’s powerplay had India at 51/1 following a strong start from both Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, but yet another middle-order collapse proved to be the hosts’ downfall.

Mandhana and Shafali had both started off well until Megan Schutt fired the former on June 26. After the powerplay, Mandhana made a few excellent shots, but she was cut off too soon because of the procession that came next. The last delivery of the eighth over saw Annabel Sutherland remove Jemimah, and then Georgia Wareham hit the major blow with Mandhana. Sutherland dismissed Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the very next over, leaving the Women in Blue reeling at 66/4.

India reached 147 with to cameos from Amanjot Kaur and Pooja Vastrakar and a counterattacking 34 from Richa Ghosh, but ultimately it proved insufficient. Australian openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney ended any chance India had of winning the match on the powerplay.

Healy in particular was hitting a 34-ball half-century with demolition mode on. The opening partnership lasted for 85 runs, essentially shutting off India’s chances of scoring 54 runs off the powerplay. Ellyse Perry and Tahlia McGrath were removed in successive balls, but it was too late as Australia easily won by seven wickets thanks to a composed effort from Beth Mooney at the other end.

Since Amol Majumdar and company have a lot of thinking to do before the T20 World Cup in October and November, India has lost all three of its white-ball series in the previous month or so: 1-2 against England in T20Is, 0-3 against Australia in ODIs, and now 1-2 against Australia in T20Is.
