Indrani Mukerjea Brings Her Mumbai Run of Chitrangada to a Powerful Close in 2025

December 2, 2025. Mumbai

The celebrated staging of Tagore’s warrior princess finds fresh momentum as Mukerjea and her team gear up for a national run, with ‘Chitrangada- Ek Sashakt Naari’ scheduled to debut in New Delhi in January 2026.

As the year closes, Indrani Mukerjea and her production house Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise (IME) have concluded a focused run of Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari in Mumbai — three staged evenings across the city that reaffirmed the play’s contemporary appeal. Each showing generated lively audience reaction and conversation, underscoring the appetite for thoughtful, female-led storytelling on stage.

“This run has been a reminder of why we make theatre,” says Mukerjea. “We want work that breathes with people, and work that grows when an audience returns. Taking Chitrangada to Delhi in January 2026 is the natural next step: to test the production in a different city and broaden the dialogue.”

Under the co-direction of Tony and Madhumita Chakraborty, the production continues to marry Tagore’s poetic source with modern choreography and a live musical score.

The staging kept its focus tight — a deliberate choice to foreground character and nuance over spectacle. Emerging performers, including Subrat Panda who plays the role of Arjun opposite Indrani’s Chitrangada, joined the ensemble, reflecting IME’s ongoing commitment to identifying and mentoring new artists within a professional repertory setting.

The evening was anchored by actor and host Maninee De, who brought warmth, ease, and a touch of theatre-world charm to the showcase.

IME’s Mumbai trilogy was conceived as a rehearsal in public for a broader programme. With the Delhi dates on the horizon in January 2026, IME will use the momentum to preview future plans, including a Tagore-inspired suite of plays titled “Nayika Bhoomika” due in early 2026 that will further explore Tagore’s iconic characters.
